Tooth Extractions

Individualized Evaluation and Thoughtful Treatment Planning

When a tooth cannot be predictably maintained or is contributing to pain, infection, or another dental problem, extraction may be considered.

SoBelle Family Dentistry performs routine tooth extractions and selected surgical extractions after evaluating the tooth, surrounding tissues, diagnostic images, medical considerations, and overall treatment needs at our Lincoln Park office in Chicago.

Some cases can be treated in our office. More complex extractions may be referred to a trusted oral surgeon when specialist care is appropriate.

When Might a Tooth Extraction Be Recommended?

An extraction may be considered when a tooth is:

  • Severely damaged or fractured
  • Affected by extensive decay
  • Associated with an infection
  • Loose because of advanced periodontal disease
  • Creating pain or swelling
  • Unable to be predictably restored
  • Interfering with another treatment plan
  • Impacted or positioned in a way that requires evaluation
  • A retained tooth that is causing a clinical concern

Extraction is not automatically recommended simply because a tooth is painful or damaged. The dentist first evaluates whether the tooth may be maintained with restorative treatment, specialist care, or another appropriate option.

Routine and Selected Surgical Extractions

SoBelle Family Dentistry provides routine extractions and selected surgical extractions when treatment in our office is clinically appropriate.

A routine extraction generally involves a tooth that can be accessed and removed without extensive surgical treatment. A surgical extraction may require additional steps because of the tooth’s condition, position, shape, or surrounding structures.

The dentist determines the appropriate treatment setting after reviewing the tooth, diagnostic information, medical history, anticipated complexity, and surrounding structures.

Emergency Tooth-Extraction Evaluations

A patient experiencing significant pain, swelling, a severely broken tooth, or another urgent concern may require prompt evaluation.

SoBelle makes every effort to accommodate same-day emergency appointments when availability permits. Please call before coming to the office, as walk-in visits generally cannot be accepted.

An emergency evaluation does not guarantee that an extraction will be completed during the same visit. Treatment depends on the diagnosis, complexity, medical and dental history, appointment availability, and whether specialist treatment is recommended.

The immediate priority may sometimes be evaluating the problem, relieving discomfort, stabilizing the condition, or coordinating specialist care.

Planned Tooth Extractions

Some extractions are planned as part of a broader treatment process rather than performed on an emergency basis. Planned extraction treatment may involve:

  • A tooth that cannot be predictably restored
  • Preparation for a complete or partial denture
  • Removal of a severely compromised tooth
  • Treatment of an ongoing infection
  • Management of a tooth that is affecting nearby structures
  • Coordination with a specialist or another phase of dental care

Wisdom-Tooth Evaluations

SoBelle Family Dentistry evaluates wisdom-tooth concerns individually.

The dentist may review tooth position, available space, symptoms, gum inflammation, decay or damage, the relationship to nearby teeth, diagnostic images, and the anticipated complexity of removal.

Some wisdom-tooth extractions may require treatment by an oral surgeon. When specialist care is appropriate, SoBelle works with trusted local specialists and can help coordinate the referral.

The evaluation does not guarantee that the wisdom tooth will be removed in our office.

Examination and Treatment Planning

Before an extraction is recommended, the dentist evaluates the tooth and discusses available options. The evaluation may include:

  • Reviewing the patient’s symptoms and concerns
  • Examining the tooth and surrounding tissues
  • Taking diagnostic images when clinically appropriate
  • Assessing whether the tooth may be restored
  • Reviewing relevant medical and dental history
  • Discussing the expected complexity of treatment
  • Determining whether care in our office or referral is appropriate
  • Reviewing anticipated costs and insurance information

Extractions Before Denture Treatment

Some patients require one or more extractions before receiving a complete denture, partial denture, or immediate denture.

SoBelle evaluates the remaining teeth, supporting tissues, treatment sequence, and anticipated complexity before determining where the extractions should be performed.

Appropriate extractions may be completed in our office. More complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon. When immediate dentures are being considered, the extraction and denture process must be carefully coordinated.

When an Oral-Surgeon Referral May Be Recommended

Referral to an oral surgeon may be appropriate when an extraction is expected to require specialist-level care.

This may depend on tooth position, root anatomy, remaining tooth structure, proximity to surrounding anatomical structures, wisdom-tooth complexity, medical considerations, previous treatment attempts, or the need for a specialized surgical approach.

A referral does not mean that every extraction is unusually serious. It means the dentist has determined that specialist care is the most appropriate treatment setting for that particular case.

Dental Insurance and Payment

SoBelle Family Dentistry accepts most dental insurance plans.

Coverage for examinations, diagnostic images, routine extractions, surgical extractions, emergency evaluations, and specialist care varies by plan.

Insurance coverage cannot be guaranteed until the applicable benefits and proposed treatment have been reviewed. If treatment is referred to an oral surgeon, the specialist’s insurance participation and fees are handled separately by that office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SoBelle perform tooth extractions?

Yes. SoBelle performs routine extractions and selected surgical extractions after an evaluation. Some cases are referred to an oral surgeon when specialist care is appropriate.

Can I have a tooth removed during an emergency visit?

Possibly, but extraction during the same visit cannot be guaranteed. The dentist must first evaluate the tooth, review relevant diagnostic information, and determine whether treatment can be completed safely and appropriately.

Do you accept walk-ins for extractions?

We generally do not accept walk-ins. Please call before coming to the office so our team can learn about your concern and confirm whether an appointment is available.

Will every severely damaged tooth need to be extracted?

No. The dentist will evaluate whether the tooth may be restored, monitored, treated by a specialist, or whether extraction is the most appropriate option.

Does SoBelle remove wisdom teeth?

Wisdom-tooth concerns are evaluated individually. Some cases may be appropriate for treatment in our office, while many are referred to an oral surgeon when specialist care is recommended.

Are surgical extractions performed at SoBelle?

Selected surgical extractions may be performed after evaluation. The dentist determines whether the procedure is appropriate for treatment in our office or should be referred.

Can extractions be performed before dentures are made?

Yes, when clinically appropriate. The dentist will evaluate the teeth, treatment sequence, and complexity. Some extractions may be completed at SoBelle, while others may be referred to an oral surgeon.

Does insurance cover tooth extractions?

Many dental plans provide some benefits for extractions, but coverage varies. Deductibles, network participation, annual maximums, plan limitations, and the type of extraction may affect patient responsibility.
