Composite Treatment for Selected Chips or Worn Areas

Tooth-colored composite material may also be used to restore selected chipped, worn, or damaged areas when clinically appropriate.

The dentist evaluates the size and location of the affected area, the condition of remaining tooth structure, the patient’s bite, the forces placed on the tooth, whether composite treatment is likely to provide an appropriate result, and whether a crown or another treatment should be considered.

Composite material is not suitable for every type of chip, fracture, or worn tooth.

Filling, Crown, or Another Treatment?

The amount and location of tooth damage help determine which restoration may be appropriate.

A filling may be suitable when enough healthy tooth structure remains to support it. A crown may be considered when a tooth is more extensively weakened or damaged.
